That’s right boys and girls, phase one of 4G63 Cougar has been accomplished. Phase two under way. Phase One: Get wife to okay swapping a 4G63 into a V6 Cougar. ;D Phase Two: Do the swap! Okay, here’s the skinny; we make the last payment on her Cougar next month. We were thinking about trading it in because she wants a 4 door sedan. All our vehicles are 2 doors. Anyway, turns out that the Blue Book on our car is only like $6,500. Even though it has only 34k on the clock and other then a couple of dings its pretty much mint. The car is worth more then that to me. So I’m keeping it. Anyway, the Cougar has a 2.5 V6 and produces only 170 Hp and about that much torque. I’m thinking why the hell not pull that V6 out and drop the 4G63 in? How hard can it be? Anyhooch, I guess the only thing left to do is figure out how exactly to do it. Thoughts?

modifying your engine mounts or making custom mounts shouldnt be too difficult.
My question is, how are you going to adapt the transaxle from the cougar to work with the 4g63 or are you going to swap all the drivelin parts from a dsm out and put it into the cougar....engine...axles...transaxle.... sounds like a lot of custom work is ahead of you.
I think it would be a great idea, might i suggest instead of going through that and making your own turbo kit for the v6 already in the car?
on a sidenote...did you happen to catch SCC last month........they had a hyundai elantra with a 4g63 swap...and it was an easy swap...lots of interchangable parts and the mounts on the hyundai works perfectly with the 4g63
i could scan in the article later.

I think I would toss the Cougars 5 speed in favor of the Mitsu trans. This is all in the very preliminary stages and I have tons of research to do. Getting things to fit shouldn’t prove to be too much trouble, getting things to work on the other hand…
And yes, I think I did come across the SCC article. Although I didn’t buy the mag, it sounds familiar. I wouldn’t mind a scan if you have the time.

Woah! Where'd this come from? More power to ya man... although the list of projects is getting longer! Hmmmm... maybe I could convince Candy to do the same swap...

The project list isn’t really longer, just different. Okay, longer. It will most likely be a couple of months before I even start. First, I need to sell the Laser to make room in the garage. Lots of planning and research to do. I think it would be a slick project.

WHAT?!?! You're NOT selling the Laser!!! Are you high?!? Sick with a 120 degree fever?!?! Possesed by some evil demon?!?! 2 words for ya'... "car cover". Keep one car covered outside while you work on the other in the garage. You can't sell your baby!

I'm with Damon how can you sell the DSM for a Cougar.

First, I really can’t have two project cars. So one has to go.
Second, although I am a huge fan of the DSM drive train, I am not a fan of the looks. The Cougar for all its performance related faults is a sharp looking car.
Third, I’m really not giving up the DSM for a Cougar so much as I am transplanting the “muscle” of the DSM into the body of the Cougar.
Fourth, to the best of my knowledge nobody has done this particular swap. I like a challenge and I would like something different.
Fifth, everyone expects a built DSM to be fast but nobody expects a Cougar to run 11s. Nobody.

Just for shits and grins you have to rice the crap out of thing, wing, stickers, light up washer nozzles. Just imagine the look on the persons face when a riced out couger kicks the shit out of them.

You are right about nobody would be expecting a 11s Cougar

a sleeper is much much better than a riced out cougar......i think its more shocking Eric serioulsy though...i wouldnt sell the laser...dont do it man.......keep it and just pick up a 4g63 for the cougar
I think a 6g72 turbo swap into the cougar would be a better bet........a FWD tranxale bolts to the turbo motor...you could get that to work on the cougar..not sure if they'res enough room under the hood though

I don’t want to sell the Laser but I just don’t have the room for my wife’s new car, my Explorer, Laser AND Cougar. I can only put one car in the garage because I have two workbenches, air tank, huge tool box, and a refrigerator (for the drinkables) as you guys are well aware. City ordinance forbids having “stored” cars in the driveway. Other then the motor and trans, the laser can be had for about $1000 to $1500 so there is no real benefit to me keeping it.
Now, I seriously doubt I could shoehorn that 6G72 into the Cougar. Although people have put 3.0 in the Cougars. But if I wanted to deal with all that, I would have kept my VR-4. Besides, the 4G63 has about a trillion more performance parts available for it. ;D

I don’t think I’ll be selling it any time soon. Currently it’s in pieces. I already sold the FMIC but that’s because I was planning on going air/liquid. Still am. I think I may just pull the motor and trans out of her and use them in the swap as opposed to buying a race prepped motor. Then, once the swap is complete and the bugs worked out, pull the motor for a complete rebuild. I will be selling the exhaust though. And if I do pull the motor and trans, I’ll be selling a rolling chassis. I’m still a ways off on doing the swap. And I still plan on using the Laser to prototype out new intake manifold.
